Do You Need To See An Emergency Dentist?

If you are suffering from pain or sensitivity in your mouth, or you have noticed a lump or a cavity that is not usually there, it is important to stop and consider how urgent your dental needs are. Many of our patients find it challenging to assess the urgency of dental problems, especially if they are not in great pain. However, some dental issues that do not cause severe pain still require urgent care, especially those which can lead to bigger problems down the line if they are not treated quickly. Signs and symptoms that you are in need of an emergency trip to the dentist include:

  • Severe pain anywhere inside your mouth
  • An abscess or swelling inside your mouth or on the gums
  • Excessive bleeding from your teeth or gums
  • A visibly damaged or chipped tooth
  • A fever that you suspect is related to a dental problem

If left untreated, many of the problems that these signs and symptoms can indicate will lead to permanent damage, loss of teeth, or in some cases serious infections that can affect your overall health as well as your dental health. If you are not sure, it is important to get assessed as soon as possible.

How To Temporarily Manage Common Dental Issues

Broken, chipped or fractured teeth

Firstly, rinse your mouth using warm water. If bleeding is present, apply a piece of gauze to the area for 20 minutes or until the bleeding stops. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth, lip, or cheek near the damaged tooth to help relieve pain and reduce any swelling.

Toothaches

If you are experiencing a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food or debris that may be lodged around the sore tooth. If swelling is present, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek in the affected area.

Abscess

An abscess is an infection which presents around the root of a tooth or in between your tooth and gums. These infections are serious and can lead to damage of your soft tissues and surrounding teeth. If left untreated, they have the potential to spread to other parts of the body and affect your overall health. As there are serious oral and general health risks that can result from a tooth abscess, visit your emergency dentist to have this condition treated as soon as possible.

Extruded, intruded or avulsed tooth

If you have experienced trauma such as a fall, assault, sports injury or traffic accident and your tooth has been extruded (partially dislodged) or intruded (pushed into the bone), see your emergency dentist immediately. In the meantime, until arriving at the dentist, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek.

If your tooth has been avulsed (completely dislodged), retrieve the tooth and take care to only hold it by the crown (the part usually visible in the mouth). If the tooth is dirty, rinse it off with water making sure to avoid scrubbing away any attached soft tissue. Gently try to reposition the tooth with very light finger pressure. If this is not possible, place it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist or store the tooth in a small container of milk, saliva, or salt water.

In either of these cases, immediately schedule an emergency dental appointment. These traumatised teeth have the highest chance of being saved if assessed and treated by your dentist within 60 minutes of the incident.

Soft tissue injuries

Wounds and cuts to your gums, lips, tongue, and cheeks can result in bleeding. To help manage the bleeding, rinse your mouth with salt water and apply a piece of gauze over the area for 20 minutes or until the bleeding has stopped. If the bleeding continues or worsens, see your emergency dentist, or go directly to a hospital to have the condition treated.

Lost filling or crown

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area. Avoid chewing on the affected side and contact your dentist promptly for professional care.

Tooth decay

To manage discomfort, gently brush and floss around the affected area. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to reduce bacteria and soothe discomfort. Visit your dentist for a comprehensive treatment plan to address the decay.

Object stuck between teeth

Gently use dental floss to try dislodging it. Avoid using sharp objects that could harm your gums or teeth. If the object doesn’t come out, refrain from forcing it, as this could cause more damage. Contact your dentist for assistance if the object remains lodged.

Tooth sensitivity

Use a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth as recommended by your dentist. Avoid hot, cold, or acidic foods and drinks that can aggravate the condition. If sensitivity persists, consult with your dentist to address underlying issues.

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health issue that requires urgent attention to alleviate severe pain, stop ongoing tissue bleeding or address severe infections. These conditions require immediate professional intervention to prevent further complications.

What are the common dental emergencies?

Common dental emergencies include toothaches, chipped or broken teeth, lost fillings or crowns and injuries to the gums or soft tissues of the mouth. Each of these situations may cause considerable pain or lead to serious oral health issues if not addressed promptly.

How do I know if I have a dental emergency?

You likely have a dental emergency if you’re experiencing intense, persistent pain, significant bleeding in the mouth or have sustained an injury to your teeth or gums. These symptoms might indicate serious underlying issues.

What should I do in a dental emergency?

Contact your dentist for immediate guidance and to arrange an urgent appointment. While waiting, you can rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area, use a cold compress to reduce swelling and apply gauze to control any bleeding. These measures are important steps to take until you receive professional care.

What should I expect when I call or visit an emergency dentist?

When you contact or visit an emergency dentist, you may expect a prompt response, a thorough examination and immediate treatment to address the issue. Following the initial treatment, your dentist might also discuss a detailed follow-up care plan.

Can an emergency dentist remove teeth?

Yes, in certain situations, an emergency dentist may perform tooth extractions. This is typically considered when a tooth is beyond repair due to severe decay, trauma, or infection. It’s performed with proper care and followed by options for restorative treatments.

How do you avoid dental emergencies?

Routine visits to the dentist can help with early detection and treatment of issues before they escalate. Also, maintaining good oral hygiene, like regular brushing and flossing, may prevent decay and gum disease. Additionally, wearing mouthguards during sports is important to protect against traumatic dental injuries.
